ABSTRACT

The empirical findings of the study are based primarily on a representative sampling of names from the birth registry offices of two towns in Germany, Gerolstein and Grimma. Gerolstein is a town in the Eifel region of western Germany, some one hundred kilometers from Cologne,8 and is primarily Catholic. The Gerolstein data was computed by a registrar, and a student assistant Dorothea Eppler handled the Grimma data. The social structure and development of Grimma is much different from that of Gerolstein. Gerolstein's late economic development in comparison to other regions impacted its demographic and social-structural development. Statistical science replies in the negative because births in Gerolstein and Grimma are not a random sample of births throughout Germany. The data's categorization consisted of the following variables: date of birth, first name, and sex of the child; and the religion, profession, and first names of both father and mother.
