ABSTRACT

The R. B. Pamplin Corporation exemplifies a company led by evangelicals that has consistently demonstrated a religious-orientation. Two Pamplins, father and son, as heads of the privately held Pamplin Corporation illustrate a steward leadership style. Both Pamplins, senior and junior, received a strong faith in God while growing up. The Pamplin Corporation's current corporate umbrella includes two major units: construction materials, concrete and asphalt, including Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. and Pamplin Communications Corporation. In addition to charitable giving, the Pamplins, senior and junior, live their religious faith and a belief in stewardship as a value through the Pamplin Corporation's relationships with its various stakeholders: shareholders, employees, and the community. They demonstrated their sense of responsibility not only through charitable donations but also in the operations of the firm's core subsidiary, Mount Vernon Mills. The environmental practices of another Pamplin Corporation subsidiary, Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co., have come under scrutiny.
