Walter J. Kohler, one of the very few three-termgovernors in the history of the state and thusone of its most successful politicians bydefinition, came to the capitol the other day togreet old friends and associates and to attendthe ceremony attending the formal unveiling of his portrait. For Kohler, unlike many Republicans and Democrats, politics was not a war, and in any case, he was not the man to make it one. There is a modern phrase, usually issued as a contemptuous command: "Get a life." Kohler eased out of politics so quickly – in part – because he had no need to "get a life." He already had one.
