ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book shows that the study of culture is concerned with the nature of moral commitment, choices about good and bad, right and wrong. It is concerned with moral issues, the study of culture should teach moral lessons. The book examines organization theorists as a culture class in the field of management, in contradistinction to social class. It focuses on study of the work of the managerial culture class, that is, an investigation into the moral assumptions and implications of its products. Melville Dalton sees the moral problem in modern organizations as a residue from premodern moral systems that irrationally restrict individual creativity and organizational action. Postmodernists seek their sanctuary against the modern world in undermining rational systems, not merely advocating and justifying informal organization a la Dalton.
