ABSTRACT

The transformation of the European Union since the mid-1980s was accompanied by a transformation of the strategies of Eurogroups at the supranational level. In this sense, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) was no exception to the rule. ETUC has three more parts: the Executive Committee, the Finance and General Purposes Committee, and the Secretariat. The conference elects the president, the general secretary, and the deputy general secretary of the Secretariat. The Executive Committee has the responsibility for representing the ETUC at European institutions. The Iberian trade union confederations are part of a larger whole at the supranational level. They are strongly committed to the European integration process, because this is the way to strengthen their position at home. Iberian trade unionists are interested in controlling the transnational corporations in their operations across the European territory, because the Iberian markets are among the most vulnerable ones, due to their low-cost labor-intensive nature.
