ABSTRACT
This article has a thesis: that the parlous state of sociology-the changes that have produced serious divisiveness -are related to its vulnerability to politicization. Concern for societal reform, to be accomplished politically, has drawn students to the field. This is not a scientific paper, it is largely one sociologist’s reactions and memories, although I report on relevant qualita tive and quantitative data as well.
