ABSTRACT

Every time a disaster like the Colorado massacre occurs, the Democrats want to focus on guns and the Republicans want to talk about the popular culture. Much of this comes from actual conviction, but economic interest often disguises itself as principle. The Republicans cannot say much about the gun lobby, because they accept too much of its money. The Democrats cannot talk about Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry, because that is where so much of their funding comes from. The gun and entertainment executives tend to patrol the same familiar borders. If more Republicans are willing to talk about guns, maybe more Democrats will be willing to ask their favorite media moguls to think harder about the social impact of the many awful products they dump on the market. Tipper Gore said the entertainment media bear some responsibility for the Colorado killings.
