ABSTRACT

For those encouraged by the changes that had been made at Adelphi between 1985 and 1995, there was no reason to investigate the Board of Trustees with regard to misconduct, neglect of duty, or failure to pursue or carry into effect the educational mission of the University. The Board of Trustees and other allies of Diamandopoulos had an overwhelming desire to believe in his wizardry. Diamandopoulos's friends were true friends, committed to defending him against his enemies, those who went public with their doubts. The Committee to Save Adelphi was dismissed by Diamandopoulos and the Board as little more than "a union front" set on blocking all of the Diamandopoulos administration's efforts to revamp the curriculum and upgrade academic standards. The President's pay precisely reflects his merits and his achievements as a unique educational leader. The Adelphi authorities used one additional stratagem to elicit support and lessen the possibility of removal by the Board of Regents.
