ABSTRACT

As in all Universities, Precedency, above other Faculties, is given to that of Theology, so the Function of a Divine, the Ministry of the Gospel is an Employment to which every Member of the Society ought to pay Deference and Respect. Moreover, every Clergy-man, who discharges his Duty as he should do, has a just Title to the Love and Affection, as well as Veneration and Esteem of the Publick. Ambassador is a modern Word, and not sounding amiss, the use of it may easily be allowed them as a piece of Civility, without looking too narrowly into the real Signification, or drawing Consequences from it prejudicial to the Clergy. The Civil Magistrates ought never to part with their Fasces to any Function or Profession whatever, but keep in their own Hands the sole Power of punishing Offences, be the Crime what it will. We don’t live in such Days of Ignorance, that none but Clergy-men can read.
