ABSTRACT

All the World takes Delight more of less in Excellency and Beauty, every one judging according to his Taste and Capacity, and the greatest Part of the Multitude have nothing to boast of their own, that exceeds Mediocrity; for this Reason, the common People are fond of every thing that belongs to the Publick, which is Praise-worthy. When the Name of the Church is given to a Temple, the Edifice itself erected for Divine Worship, is done by a figurative Way of speaking; but otherwise, that the Word in the plainest as well as most charitable Acceptation signifies all that believe in christ, of what Sect or Perswasion soever, and includes the Laity as well as the Clergy. When Church signifies Religion; it includes both Clergy and Laity; but, when there is spoke of the Government and Authority of the Church, nothing is understood but the Clergy alone, for the Laity has nothing to do there, but to obey.
