ABSTRACT

It has to be sobering to write now about my Freud and His Followers, which originally appeared in English in 1975. Almost as daunting as the recent expansion of knowledge about Freud and his circle is the realization that this is a book on which I worked for over ten years. Looking back now, it seems that Freud and His Followers is still alive because of special features that went into its construction. I had had the good fortune to interview during the 1960s a large number of people who had known Freud personally; so that my writing about the history of psychoanalysis was informed by personal acquaintance not just with those who had been familiar with him but also with many who had themselves played a key role in the development of that momentous change in how we think about ourselves which has come to be known as the Freudian revolution in the history of ideas.
