ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author examines several issues which individuals and couples who plan to adopt an older child or a sibling group need to understand and which agencies placing such children need to acknowledge. However, issues in the international adoption of children, especially older children, overlap with some of the important issues involved in the domestic adoption of the children most likely to be available for adoption. Some of the issues that may be associated with both younger and older child adoptions are similar to those of children available for adoption from some Eastern European countries. Other research on international adoptees is also relevant to the discussion of issues involved in adopting a child or children who has certain kinds of early experiences. The cadres of researchers who are interested in the most recent wave of international adoptees include Americans, Canadians and the British.
