ABSTRACT

The concept of generations is ancient. It is well-documented in the Bible, in both the Old and the New Testaments, and the Koran. In many ways, however, the definition and experience of generations is changing signifi cantly. In this chapter we consider a variety of matters that are important to the practical issue of understanding generations. We consider how gen erations are defined, how they are perceived, and how they critically affect the lives of generation members. We begin with a consideration of theo retical, definitional, and design elements. Generational issues as global phenomena are considered next, recognizing that different population trends, economic and geographical realities, practically and fundamen tally influence the experiences of generation members. We also consider the nature and expectations of generational transfers, both affective and instrumental, and how these exchanges influence the health and well being of family members.
