ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the dimensions of solidarity, and the analysis model for their interrelationships. It explores an overview of the variables at our disposal for the analysis of current parent–child relationships. The chapter analyzes the extent to which parents and adult children give similar or dissimilar ratings on the several dimensions of their relationship, by correlating parents’ ratings on each dimension with the ratings given by their children on the same dimension. It explores how the dimensions of solidarity “hang together” or not, by correlating each dimension of solidarity with all other dimensions, and comparing the results when they concern relations with mothers with those concerning fathers, as well as when they involve ratings given by parents vs. ratings given by children. Normative obligations toward parents and children are also rooted in early life experience.
