ABSTRACT

The major life history events for males and females show some biological similarities but many important differences. Marriage preferences seem to indicate that women were quite choosy about their male partner. A final characteristic of Ache marriage is the high variation across individuals in marital duration for both sexes. Ache children show food awareness and request food at an earlier age than American children, but the developmental rate of other social skills is equivalent. A final characteristic of Ache marriage is the high variation across individuals in marital duration for both sexes. The lack of frequent spouse switching in other groups suggests that the Ache may be extreme in the continuum from high to low marital stability. Explanations for the high Ache divorce rate can be sought in the demographic parameters themselves. Ache informants often stated that young women preferred to marry older men, and young men were sometimes forced to marry older women or stay single.
