ABSTRACT

This chapter contemplates future advancements in drone-related technology and the impact these technologies may have on the aviation industry. It also considers how the rapid evolution in drone technology may cause international aviation treaties to become outdated. The chapter shows some of the key developments: the miniaturisation of drones; drones as the cheapest and most cost-effective transportation option; fully autonomous drone technologies; the practice of drone 'swarming'; more enduring and energy efficient technologies; and refining drones as more environmentally friendly platforms. It focuses on developments in relation to drone platforms themselves, some attention to proposals for air traffic control systems is necessary. Development of technology will continue to outpace the regulatory process, including in relation to privacy, safety, security and airspace. Privacy will continue to be a fundamental concern associated with the use of drones. Key regulatory questions regarding airspace include whether there needs to be a distinction between non-autonomous, partially autonomous and fully autonomous aircraft.
