ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on the motivations for participation in learning/volunteer abroad for development (LVA4D) programmes in the Global South. It hinges on questions geared to understanding why volunteers and host organization staff and community members participate in these programmes. The book examines a broader range of privileges such as time; mobility; affluence; and position. These privileges are examined in relation to the experiences of volunteers’ and host partners’ positive and critical assessments of volunteer abroad programmes. The book examines the prospects for effective practices that emerged in the analysis of the research findings. It offers a nuanced analysis of the limitations and potential for meaningful engagement and thick global citizenship, drawing on insights into the perspectives of Canadian youth who travel abroad and the host country partners who receive them.
