ABSTRACT
The time has come to take stock of the ground that has been covered, and in so doing to locate ecological psychology in the broader context of the discipline of psychology. In part, this chapter is intended as an overview of what has preceded, tracing out its arc—although it is not a summary of all of the issues covered. Instead, the emphasis is on the beginning and end points of the presentation, attempting to take a longer view of the argument free of the distractions that may have been produced by the exposition of approaches, historical and philosophical discussions, and justifications for claims scattered throughout. In this way, the discussion intends to highlight some of the theoretical commitments of ecological psychology, both in order to identify some of the intentions of ecological psychology to date and to consider how it might contribute prospectively to the science of psychology.
