ABSTRACT

One way of exploring the mental creation of relationships is to look at how individuals categorize information about behavior in their relationships. The model of relational expectations, presented at the end of chapter 1, reflects how such information about relationships is stored in and retrieved from memory. Integral to this process is the way in which people pigeon-hole what they observe in their daily lives. In this chapter, various types of categorization schemes, known to cognitive researchers as schemata, scenes, scripts, and prototypes, are represented.
