This book is about the literary culture of a fifth-sixth-grade elementary classroom-a classroom where, as Nikki’s mother put it, the literature came first. Nikki was a student participant in my study of this classroom, where I spent a school year watching 10-to 12-year-olds read and talk about literature.1
