ABSTRACT
Bernadine begins her chapter by presenting initial work she did in making her read alouds of children’s literature more interactive and collaborative for her special needs students. These efforts were to “loosen their tongues,” as she called it, which required that she reexamine her own role in this literacy event so as to make possible more opportunities for her students’ participation in book discussions.
