ABSTRACT
As one of the sole requirements for students across the country, the new freshman composition course obviously served political and social as well as educational goals. The forms of discourse and grammar provided a rule-governed methodology that de-emphasized individual thinking and expression, thus helping to produce the competent but complacent employees needed for an industrial society.
