ABSTRACT

In this chapter we present a case for the view that “robust” imagistic expertise, such as that routinely seen in human authors, can’t be replicated by way of the machinery available to AI, whether of the connectionist or logicist variety. 1 After articulating this case, we share the engineering moves we made in response to it when devising the Brutus architecture and building Brutus1, the first attempt at instantiating that architecture.
