ABSTRACT

Today’s schools are asked to be more responsive to local needs and different sociocultural interests. Critical policymaking is a way of helping schools become more organic to their cultural communities. In this chapter, I describe this collaborative approach to school management, tracing its basis in theories of knowledge, and presenting an applied example of critical policymaking at work. I offer critical policymaking as a form of emancipatory leadership. It is a logical process of discovery and reform that also has emancipatory implications for people from diverse backgrounds.
