ABSTRACT
On September 12, 1966, the first American Indian community-controlled school opened its doors to 220 students, from beginners (6-year-olds) through sixth grade. Only one child in the two beginners classes, which had a total enrollment of 38, was reported as speaking English (Roessel, 1966b).
