ABSTRACT

In the fall of 1995, not long after the school became accredited, the Rough Rock faculty, staff, and school board prepared to celebrate the school’s 30th anniversary. Committees were formed to coordinate various aspects of the event. The atmosphere was one of optimism and pride. But as we conducted the interviews for the book that would mark this anniversary, a current of conflict surfaced. Within a few months, that conflict would erupt in a protest and boycott of the school. This chapter is an account of the protest and its aftermath.
