ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the people who are paid to raise money. It discusses where these fund raisers work, where they come from, their salaries, and other characteristics. Particular attention is given to the feminization of fund raising and the differences in pay and positions between male and female practitioners. Gender discrimination is an important problem. If inequities are not corrected, fund raising will be perceived as less attractive by individuals considering it for a career. Charitable organizations will not achieve their potential if they continue to undervalue the talents and skills of women—the majority of fund raisers.
