ABSTRACT

Although antecedents of the fund-raising function can be traced to the founding days of our country, systematic efforts to raise money in the United States did not begin until the early 1900s. Fund raising has gone through a dramatic evolution that has not been readily apparent or well documented in the literature. This chapter first examines the evolution in detail. It then describes the four historical stages through which the practice of fund raising has passed. These stages also represent four models, or the different ways fund raising has been and is practiced.
