ABSTRACT

This and the next chapter focus on mixed joint receipts and mixed binaiy gambles, where “mixed” means one consequence is seen as a gain and the other as a loss. Although it is not strictly necessaiy to do so, I fmd that adopting a notation of signed subscripts sometimes helps one to recall which symbol refers to a gain and which a loss. So, for example, if /+ £ e £ g - t then the mixed joint receipt becomes f+ © g~ and a typical mixed gamble becomes (/+ ,C; g_). Other times, in particular in proofs when the subscripts become cumbersome, I drop them.
