ABSTRACT
As mentioned in the introduction to the book, the function of a normal live cochlea is extraordinarily complicated and difficult to explain. Death simplifies it without abolishing the fundamental mode of its mechanical operation. Analysis of the simplified cochlear mechanics can serve as a first step in the analysis of the normal one in a way analogous to that used in the analysis of the middle ear function.
