ABSTRACT

The SCT was originally devised as part of a program of research on women’s attitudes and personalities, and the particular study it was first intended for concerned women’s and adolescent girls’ “acceptance of the feminine (or woman’s) role,” a topic that now sounds dated. This interest led to inclusion of some sentence stems (e.g., “A woman’s body-,” and “A pregnant woman-”) (SCT for women, Form 9-62) which lacked face validity in use of the test with men. In further research, a parallel test for men was needed. The SCT devised for men included many of the original items but deleted those that seemed most inappropriate and added an equal number of stems that tapped topics more acceptable to men (SCT for men form 9-62 for men, Appendix C).
