ABSTRACT
Rhetorical theory enters into dialogue with political theory when it reinforces or extends the deliberative horizon of a given politics-that is, what is expected and what is possible. Two statements about democracy-one about the Peloponnesian War and one about the Vietnam War-can clearly show this connection.
