ABSTRACT

The mind is the bridge that connects the body to the soul; it should be possible for the mind to explain the relation between genetics, cell structures, and so forth, and the roles and problems of men and women in society. But it cannot do it very well. The realms of physiology and culture are incommensurate and rely on different vocabularies. It is as if we were trying to build an explanatory link between the sound of a drill on a construction crew and the music of Mozart; it cannot be done.
