ABSTRACT

Television came to the fore and radio faded into the musical wallpa-per business during the 1952-1960 period. This chapter takes usfrom the end of the FCC Freeze on television station construction in 1952 to the quiz show and payola scandals in 1959 and 1960, which caused a shakeup in the FCC and new public awareness of the business of broadcasting. For television the period opened with growth and excitement but ended with questions and recriminations.
