ABSTRACT

I was in eighth grade at Ramsey Junior High and the Science Museum

of Minnesota was opening up a new exhibit hall called the Experiment

Gallery and was hiring youth explainers for it. Regardless of my

personal drive, competitive spirit, and strong parental support,

somehow I had gotten the impression from my environment

—especially my teachers-that boys were more “math and science-

minded” and that there were no people of color doing anything related

to these subject areas. Nevertheless, I applied to become a youth

explainer.
