When the World Trade Organization (WTO) planned its global confer-ence in Seattle in 1999, the mood was expected to be quiet and serious. Instead, television viewers the world over watched in horror as mobs of protesters took to the city's cafe-lined streets. What unleashed such a passionate response? The answer, in short, is basic human and environmental concerns.
