ABSTRACT

Synopsis This chapter builds on the information in the previous chapter about the three languages and specifically addresses the 2nd Language. The intent is to raise your consciousness concerning the universality of 2nd Language consideration. To do this, 2nd Language scenarios are presented. The three scenarios illustrate the frequent paths into leadership: (a) I’m the leader because my coworkers like me (a popular leader); (b) I’m the leader because the bosses like me (a high achieving the leader); and (c) I’m the leader because I’m good at what I do (a technical or an expert leader). We also clarify that these “calls” to lead are not perfectly correlated with readiness for or personality alignment with specific leadership situations. This will prepare us for chapter 6, where we review 2nd Language strategies to include recommendations for leaders in these scenarios.
