Who's In Charge Here?

There is little doubt about who controls the professions of law and medicine. The American Medical Association and the National Bar Association set the standards for admission to their ranks, and discipline committees are responsible for setting ethical standards and for policing the conduct of the members of their associations. While there are, of course, state and federal regulations that they must abide by, the professions are relatively autonomous.
