ABSTRACT

Marriage. In order to focus primarily on the mediating variables, we decided to focus on just one of the new roles and responsibilities of young adulthood: the transition into marriage-a post-high-school experience that involves a large proportion of young adults and that was found in previous research to have fairly large impacts on various types of substance use. We chose to contrast young adults who did and did not make the transition from single to married sometime between the first follow-up (modal ages 19-20) and the third follow-up (modal ages 23-24).
