ABSTRACT

Educational policy was a major reason for the rapid movement of ideas and people between England and India. Influenced by Western ideas of equality, writers of the 1949 Indian Constitution faced a formidable obstacle in the traditional Hindu religious and social system based on unequal treatment of castes and women by legal and educational institutions. Indian National Congress was a pivotal participant in the struggle for independence, a constitution, and equality. The Indian Constitution and education system demonstrate how human rights ideas in the global flow are adopted and used to justify social change. Caste is central to Hinduism. The caste system constitutes social classes according to religious dogma. During a lifetime, there is no mobility between castes. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar's life illustrated the cultural blending resulting from the cultural flow of the colonial and post-colonial world. Theosophy had a major impact on Ghandhi's spiritual development. The Theosophy Society promoted comparative religious studies in the United States, England and India.
