ABSTRACT

Given that few people of color are in news management, and television station ownership historically has not been aggressively working to change that, it may be helpful to gain an understanding of how that may or may not impact local news coverage. Some people within the news operations also acknowledged a lack of coverage of people of color. When speaking with informants inside the local news organizations or sources in local communities, a consensus also emerged as to the location of most coverage of people of color. A Native American television journalist in Albuquerque was realistic about his colleagues' knowledge and understanding of issues that concern the New Mexico Pueblos. He almost always is asked to cover any issues concerning Native Americans. Community leaders had no trouble naming a myriad of issues that receive little, if any, coverage from the local television news operations.
