ABSTRACT

Hegemony is a system in which politics operates largely through the incorporation of oppositional currents in the prevailing system of rule, and culture operates largely through the reinterpretation of oppositional discourse in the prevailing framework of social expression, representation, and debate. News organizations should be making every effort to recruit and retain people of color in management positions, rather than so often funneling them toward more visible on-air positions. Part of this effort could begin with paid internships, which are rare in the broadcast industry. Hegemony is evident in the practice of news decision-making that continually reinforces values and norms held by White managers who have no stake in radical change. Because of the dearth of research done in regard to people of color and broadcast news, and especially the lack of research on the news coverage of people of color other than African-Americans, almost any additional research would be helpful in aiding our understanding of these and other questions.
