ABSTRACT

One of our tasks in today's society is to sift through the abundance of data and retrieve the useful information. The effective means of collecting real data is to allow students to conduct their own surveys. Collecting data using topics that interest children can increase enthusiasm for mathematics. Displaying the data by using bar graphs and pie charts can be fun, hands-on activities for children of all ages. Teachers' goal with the use of data is to get the students to think and use analytical skills. Teaching probability is a wonderful opportunity to incorporate hands-on learning activities in the elementary curriculum as well as provide added enjoyment and enthusiasm for students in mathematics. Providing the children with a background in basic statistics can help them become informed consumers. Data to be analyzed by elementary students should have some interest for them.
