A total of 229 persons died. A major disaster occurring in the neighborhood of a major daily newspaper is reason to pull the entire staff together to cover the event. Newsday , located in nearby Melville, New York, serves the entire region. It was Newsday's story and it involved beat news writers and feature writers as well as everyone else on the news team-editors, photographers, graphic artists, and others.
