ABSTRACT

In this chapter we provide a model for the development of simulation exercises and a set of specific steps to follow in their development. The model and steps are designed to help the simulation developer attain the ultimate goal of producing a realistic testing situation that elicits behavior related to dimensions of job and organizational success. The model gives an overall conceptual framework for the exercise construction process. It is quite general, but gives a road map for all subsequent work. The model provides a rationale for:

• steps that are presented later in this chapter, • issues needing to be considered during exercise construction (chap. 3), • methods for analyzing jobs and organizations (chap. 4), • requirements relevant to each specific type of exercise (chap. 5 to 12),

and • suggestions for evaluating the quality of the simulation (chap. 14).
