ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I discuss the initial stages involved in conducting observational research. Although we are typically motivated to undertake an observational study for practical or scientific reasons, the specifics of the observational process per se remain vague until we actually enter the field that we are planning to study. No matter how well-formulated our ideas may be, those ideas must inter face with the specific situations in which we observe.
