ABSTRACT

College dominates high school. It dominated it literally after 1892 by establishing the precollege curriculum that is in place today. But it also dominates it psychologically by being the driving force in the motivation of every student and every parent. Whenever I suggest any change in the high school curriculum to any group of parents, the first question they have is about how the colleges will perceive this change. Parents are deathly afraid, long before their kids enter high school, that somehow whatever path their child has chosen will have been the one of which Harvard wouldn't approve.
