ABSTRACT

There is little doubt that when we refer to an educated person, or an educated mind, we are talking about something rather specific. For example, we would expect an educated person to know something about Chaucer, to have read Plato, to understand the implications of the industrial revolution, to be able to relate the foreign policy of the United States to that of the Romans, to know about the origins of the Cold War and the demise of the Soviet empire. In any case, Clifton Fadiman knew about all these things and this is what he would have meant by an educated mind. Fadiman knew nothing about artificial intelligence, cognitive science, or e-learning. This I know from personal experience with the man.
