ABSTRACT

Chapter Focus The purpose of this chapter is to describe five designs that middle-and highschool teachers, students and community-partner teams can use as frameworks for service-learning projects. These designs can help teams develop projects that involve the key elements of collaborative service-learning even though teachers’ experience and students’ maturity vary, community partners have a range of needs, and service-learning resources are limited or extensive. The chapter begins by describing the designs, providing examples of them and showing how each incorporates commitment, cooperative outcomes planning, reflective-learning and celebration of growth. It then identifies and discusses variables that a servicelearning team can usefully consider when selecting a design for its own, unique service-learning project.
