ABSTRACT

The linking of diverse computers and other hardware called networking marked a major step in bringing efficiency and organization to the production of news. It also opened the way for automation of news production. During the late 1980s, links were developed that integrated the broadcast newsroom computer system into other automation systems throughout broadcast facilities. Links were made with the traffic computers for advertising, with engineering computers to play tapes and with billing computers to invoice customers. In this chapter you will see how the various departments interact with news production in a typical TV station. The final section will look at the engineering and production departments because they work in an interdependent manner.
